The Refreshed Mercedes

Meisterschaft is the masterpiece of exhaust systems and boasts a background of more than 10 years in development. Worldwide partners contributed to the experience, know-how, insight, premium quality, and impeccable designs that can be found within the Meisterschaft brand. GTHAUS harnessed the power of quality engineering to facilitate the best sounding and performing exhaust systems out there. To put it simply, there is nothing quite like it on the market and, arguably, nothing better. Now that you’re face to rear bumper with the Explorer ST (we don’t suggest checking this out on a car that isn’t yours—you will look strange), crawl under the vehicle, and look up. Ford pipes the exhaust to four outlets—but turns the gases 90 degrees to flow downward and exit from the underside of each chrome tip.

The Mercedes C-Class, CLA-Class, AMG C63, and even the AMG GT are just a few cars bearing the three-pointed star badge that have fake exhaust tips. Audi’s new SQ5 has some noticeably fake exhaust tips, and is possibly the worst offender we’ve seen so far. Even some supercar and hypercar brands do this, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Bugatti. Fake exhaust tips aren’t just on wannabe sports cars that have fake hood and fender vents. The best automakers in the world are putting them on awesome cars. That’s not saying other automakers aren’t doing this too, but we want to believe that Mercedes and Audi are better than that. We try to keep up with automotive trends and make sense of them if we can.

Sometimes, however, automakers’ decisions don’t make much sense at all. If the exhaust isn’t really there, why the hell do you need to make it look like it is? And don’t say conventions, because that’s about as helpful as insisting that an electric car should have a grille when there’s literally no need for it. If you disconnect the exhaust valve electric connector and run the vehicle without this connection, the valve will stay open assuming you disconnected the connector while the valve was open. It’s unlikely you will get an error code on your dash but the vehicle may notice that the valve is disconnected and think it’s jammed and therefore reduce power. The exhaust system components for all AMG’s in the same model year are identical.

The sound characteristics are dependent on the currently selected drive program – from rich in drive programs C and S to emphatically sporty in mode S+. Control is by means of a variably adjustable exhaust gas flap – without loss of power. Control of the exhaust gas flaps is dependent on both engine speed and load, guaranteeing a 100% power delivery. If desired, the cold start noise can be reduced in drive programs C and S. For a few years now, Formula 1 engines have used electric turbochargers, with an electric motor attached to the shaft that connects the compressor and turbine wheels. The effect is virtually no turbo lag, as the electric motor spins up the compressor and turbine far quicker than exhaust gasses alone. Neat stuff, and thanks to Mercedes-AMG, it’s coming to production road cars. As exhaust gases exit the 3.0L Turbo engine and flow into an AWE Tuning 180 Technology® equipped resonator, they pass through strategically located ports, and into reflection chambers. Sound waves, carried by these exhaust gasses, bounce off the walls of the reflection chambers.

Without a fully-functioning exhaust system, exhaust gases would likely enter the cabin. That means that you and your passengers are in danger of inhaling excessive monoxide, which can permanently damage your health or result in death. The good old Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro still have legit exhaust tips. Volkswagens’ GTI gets real tips as does Honda’s Civic Si and Type R. The Honda Civic is a little surprising because it has some fakery going on with its front plastic bits, but we’re glad to see Honda didn’t resort to fake tips. These cars are just a few of the many out there that have real exhausts. Two exhaust outlets would be okay if all of the exhaust pipes all connected up, but they don’t. Instead, the two outer most exhaust pipes of the monster hypercar spit out under the rear diffuser. The two exhaust outlets in the rear also, don’t really do much. Still, at least the four central exhaust pipes do spit exhaust through the openings.

Supporting modifications – The highest power levels require supporting modifications. Depending on the engine, this could mean forged internals, built transmission, upgraded fuel system, 110+ octane race fuel, etc. Engine Health – Higher miles tends to result in increased build up and lower compression which can and will impact engine output. Properly maintained engines will have better performance than abused or neglected engines.

So the simplest solution is to go for a bigger engine as a replacement for what you already have. It’ll be a quick solution in getting a louder sound regarding you can deal with all the common difficulties. Autoweek participates in various affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid commissions on editorially chosen products purchased through our links to retailer sites. For the straight-line bits, I just set the driving mode to comfort and listened to the background rumble. For the curvy bits, I dialed it to Sport Plus and chucked it into corners like a toddler in a power wheel. It’s not just sound, of course, handling, too, considering the car’s size, more than 187 inches long, is impressive. Plenty of grip from the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and generally good responses to inputs. Furthermore, the seats provide plenty of lumbar support and adjustable upper bolstering as well.

But obviously, you could achieve similar results by doing individual mods the way I did, or even going further by picking up some high flow cats. The SLK55 might have slower response steering as compared to rivals from Audi and BMW, especially with so much torque on top. You gun the SLK55, by the time you are ready to steer the car to change lanes, you’re already super close to the car you/re trying to pass, but the steering isn’t instantaneous. That slight delay in the steering forces you to adjust your throttle, and reconsider flooring the car in the future. Selecting a different dealer may impact the price and availability of items in your cart. There is no visible clue to whether you have the exhaust option I don’t believe.

We have a feeling the prototype lacked many of the bits and pieces of the Clubsport Package, while that rear diffuser will likely be replaced by a new setup to neatly integrate the exhaust. Speaking of which, our spies have informed us the test vehicle was a bit louder than the regular GT R. It looks like one of the novelties Mercedes has in tow is a different exhaust system with stacked dual tips on each corner of the rear bumper in the same vein as Lexus is doing with its hot F-badged cars. It seems the prototype had the R’s regular diffuser, but with the vertical fins chopped off to make room for the exhaust finishers. The hexagonal-shaped central exhaust might look like it’s still there, but you can see it’s actually blocked off. My SLK320 is not exactly a AMG but I wanted that little extra grunt without the car sounding like a Corsa with a drain pipe and my local exhaust shop put sport cats on for me. Done the job nicely quite a few of the lads from our local runs have commented on the sound. Established in 1990, Akrapovič is a Slovenian manufacturer of premium motorcycle exhaust systems. Akrapovič exhausts was founded by Igor Akrapovič, a racer and enthusiast who won multiple Formula-1 and World Superbike championship titles.

Walker is your one-stop exhaust shop, offering a full line of mufflers, pipes, hardware and accessories. Actually, the exhaust flaps have more to do with sound than actual performance. If you are driving an AMG SL65, you might notice more of a power gain than if you are driving a CLA45, but in reality, it is only a few horsepower. That being said, the sound change is like magic and gives driving a really fun twist. Most modern Mercedes-Benz performance cars are equipped with Mercedes-Benz exhaust flap technology for adjusting air flow through the exhaust, affecting sound, performance, and comfort. AMG exhaust system with larger pipes and modified mufflers to reduce back-pressure .

It achieves similar goals—reducing turbo lag and improving low-end torque—but it’s a separate device from the turbocharger. The M139 offers a maximum of 414 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, and it’s unclear how these numbers will change with the addition of the new electric turbocharger. The idea is to blend the quick response of a smaller turbo with the power-generating-capability of a big one. As with an F1 MGU-H, the electric motor is mounted directly to the shaft that connects the turbine and compressor wheels. The motor is driven off a 48-volt electrical system and starts spinning up the compressor wheel before exhaust gasses spin up the turbine. ”Integrity first, quality best” is our tenet. We have confidence in providing you with excellent service and ideal products. Depending on the driving condition, the driver receives acoustic feedback, ranging from sonorous acoustics, during a more constant and quiet ride, to a sporty and louder sound (Mercedes says “emotional”) when accelerating. Moreover, the intake system and exhaust system are precisely matched to the respective engine load, Mercedes claims. Depending on the driving condition, the exhaust flaps are switched accordingly- primarily at high loads – in order to ensure optimum flow. Putting it into Sport plus, also changes the exhaust from “balanced” mode to “powerful,” which brings us back to sound. I was so enamored by it that I reached out to Mercedes-Benz to learn more about what the engineers did to retain such a throaty and loud exhaust despite modern emissions standards and turbocharging. All our exhausts systems are “Made in Germany”, from stainless steel (Krupp-Steel), as are our clamps. The tailpipes are chromed, thus a long, low maintenance gloss is ensured.
